Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, episode 5 recap: Lance Hunter is back!

After this week’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it would seem that all of the season five’s biggest questions were answered, but one still remained: who were they saving the world from?

At the end of last week’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fitz finally makes his appearance, and in this week’s episode, “Rewind,” we finally discover what became of Fitz when he was left behind at that diner, and how he was able to travel through time to the future.

Now that we know why they were sent, however, another question arises: what are they saving humanity from, exactly? We still don’t know, unfortunately, but the episode was too good to let that bother us. Let’s do a recap.

Hunter is back!

First things first, our favorite mercenary, Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), is back! It appears that the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent has been living the would-have-been plot of Marvel’s Most Wanted, had it been picked up to series — he and Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) are still on the run after being disavowed by S.H.I.E.L.D. in an effort to spare their lives, and in exchange have been offering themselves as mercenaries for hire to aid whoever is in need. Oh, and they’re still bickering about everything. I would have watched that show.

It was great to have Nick Blood back, especially since the spin-off was axed. Nick and Adrianne brought great chemistry to their roles, and were perfect additions to the main cast — and even if Nick’s appearance this week was just a one-off, it was a great nod to the fans. Let’s hope it’s not just a one-off, though. Now, if only they can book Adrianne for an appearance or two in the near future. (Tomorrow too soon?)

Remember that diner scene? Well, it turns out that that occurred a good many years ago — 74 years, to be exact, which means the other agents time traveled to the year of 2091. The episode flashes back to that time, just moments after the team was abducted. A military unit appears and arrests Fitz — he was hauled off to prison, where he remained six months. There, Hunter appears as his attorney, busting him out of jail! How’d he know he was there? They’d been communicating by letter, while complaining about European football. Of course.

Fitz uses a cryogenic chamber to travel through time the long way, all the while aboard Enoch’s spacecraft, which was safely hidden far from Earth. He also hides supplies in the Lighthouse, complete with a new, upgraded hand for Coulson.

Dealing with the darkness inside

Fitz is clearly still grappling with the aftermath of the Framework — we watch as he holds a gun to Enoch’s head with no hesitation while pushing him for information. “That came from inside me,” he says. You can hear his guilt. He might have spent 70+ years in ice, but the 2091 version of Fitz is still damaged.

He also mentions his relationship with Simmons — he thinks they’re cursed to be apart, and at this point, it’s hard to argue. Why can’t they just all be happy!?

“I love you.” / “I know.”

Fitz and Hunter are awesome as individuals, of course. Put them together and what have you got? Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo! Goodness gracious, I need more … lots more!

They re-enacted a scene from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, just in time for the new film’s release: as Fitz was about to be cryogenically frozen, Hunter said, “I love you,” and Fitz responds in Han Solo Style, “I know.” Aww!

Because she said so

So, we finally know why Coulson and Co. were sent to the future: an Inhuman girl said so.

Fitz and Hunter met with a girl named Robin Hinton, a clairvoyant Inhuman who prophesied that S.H.I.E.L.D. would travel to the year 2091 to save humanity — a vision brought to life by Enoch. Fitz demanded to know why he wasn’t sent with the team, to which Enoch replied, “You weren’t part of the seer’s prophecy, Mr. Fitz.”

Though Robin had foreseen that they will save humanity, she has not made it clear what S.H.I.E.L.D. is saving humanity from. It’s gotta be the Kree, right?
